We hope you’re all well and having a great week.
In today's update we have some news on production.
Production Update
From the last time we updated you, we began production on the Subs and continued the stress testing in everyday conditions.
We found that under some circumstances, when a large force is applied to the Sub at a specific angle near the keyring holder, the frame of the Sub could bend out of shape and if applied consistently, the force could cause the waterproof seal to be uncovered.
As soon as we noticed this, we paused all production and began working around the clock with our manufacturer and designers to ensure this wouldn’t happen again.
What went wrong?
We noticed that during our simulations we didn’t check if the Sub would withstand the pressure when it rolled while the pressure was applied. This would happen for example while the Sub was under a car wheel. It would move slightly until it was standing with the LED face up. It was at this point that it could bend out of shape and undo the waterproof seal.
We noticed that this didn’t happen with the original Sub design but that it happened when we upgraded to AG3 at which point we didn’t apply the appropriate simulations and real world testing.
How did we fix it?
Instead of going back to AG1 with 3x less light duration, we’ve tested the Sub along all angles using AG2 batteries with plenty of space around them in order to ensure there are no weak points.
This would mean that you’ll be able to fit in 3xAG2 batteries to get the entire 4.5V brightness or 2xAG3 batteries (with a little bit of foil at the back to make the 0.6mm connection) to get 3V.
What now?
We’ve done simulations from every angle, including the angles where it wouldn’t normally be, and we can say we’re satisfied with the outcome. We really wanted to reach a result so we had some good news to give you at the end of this update.
We’re happy to say that while we were editing the design, we made the thread and silicon longer, making for a slightly tighter and more purposeful turn.
We hope you still have faith in us as we’re still going through the motions, we’re just experiencing a little delay right now.
We’ll send out another update when the final production sample is ready so you can get your eyes on that - even though it might not look that different from the outside as most of the changes are structural and internal.
